sooooooooo much for that

Well, it's been 20 days since my last post. I don't have a good excuse other than I'm just exhausted (lazy, fine line I say) and just can't seem to put pen to paper when I get home at night.

Highlights of the last few weeks:
- I missed Washington Social Club at the Black Cat. I'm bummed, but had no desire to go alone...interesting how people who say "oh I LOVE them" or "I saw them last year" say they'll come but when push comes to shove, it's a no go...

-59 of my closest friends accompanied me to RFK for the Nats vs Met's game. It was a good time. I got all of my money back and got to hang with my friends. Highlight: having a discussion with Steveo about the Jewish concept of hell (from Jane: "What am I hearing at a baseball game? A conversation about hell?!") Lowlight: falling (tripped, slipping, whatev) in front of RFK like a dumbass and hurting an already weak ankle ("you guys go ahead without me...I think I'm going to just go straight to the hospital" but since I'm a trooper, hung out on the grass for a couple of innings, headed to first aid and then to the bleachers for some QT time)

-Calling in "sick" on Friday the 18th ("I think I ate something baaaaad") so that Jane and I could head up to DE for a weekend at Bethany Beach. We drove around Rebouth and felt OOOLLD and returned back to Bethany to hang out with our group and relax. Might have been the saving grace of the month. Got a serious burn on my shoulders, but now I have a nice glow. (my roommate from Boston said yesterday: "you look tan" and I replied "yep, anything darker than translucent is good for me")

-Lots of work stuff going on. I had my review and it actually went well. My boss and I are working together to have a solid relationship and I think things are getting better. I'm still not happy, but at least not completely miserable.

-Students moved into the building on the 26th and they are...well, how do I say this, as an educator myself: they are DUMB. Including this conversation:
girl: "can I sign out a desk for the semester?"
C$: "sure, do you have someone to help you?"
girl: "um..no?" [i knew her parents were still around]
C$": "well, they are big...."
girl: "if you could help me, I would appreciate it"
[okay bad start...but i'm a sucker]
C$: " they are pretty big, so you may want to wait until your roommate arrives so you have a gauge of the size of the room with her stuff in it, too."
girl: "well there's already a desk in the room that's perfect for me, but I dont want my roommate not to have anything so I figured I'd borrow something now..."
C$: "um you shouldn't have a desk in your room at all...?"
girl: "oh well it's a small one"
C$: "that's called a nightstand....."

anyway, it'll be an interesting semester and I'm sure I'll have some great stories to share

-Jane and I headed to Camden Yards last Friday. I had free tickets from the O's office for selling so many to the Sept 14th Sox game. Getting there is a beyotch! Met some crazy mormans (is that kosher?) on the way home that wanted to "buy me dinner."

-I attempted to head out to Adam's Morgan (I loathe thee) with fellow "adults" from the building...but I forgot my ID. Reports of doing this on puporse are neither being confirmed or denied (thanks I-66!)

-Ordered a new Palm Pilot TX and it arrived on Monday. swwwwwwwwwwweeeeet. I love me some palm.

-This long weekend is shaping up to a fun one, lots of drinking involved, is all works out. Isn't that an indicator of a fun weekend?

And can I just say that I LOVE the Sports Guy Bill Simmons? I can't stand his voice, but love love love him.

I'M BACK!

At least, well sorta :)

My laptop is on the fritz and I can't get online from my room, but thankfully I've got this nifty little computer lab all set up and at my disposal...sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.

So I'll be back to posting a bit more regularly and hope to get back in the scene of DC blogs. I'm trying to stay somewhat a mystery as to who I am exactly, but plan to keep things on the up and up so that if anyone were to find me, I wouldn't be embarrassed and forced to shut down (or delete old posts) as many DC bloggers seem to fail victim too, at least recently.

I hope to back with more stories of what my ladies and I get ourselves into, a little introspection of myself and life in general, of course some sports reference and what have you.

it's good to be back DC and I can't wait to get it on!

But to tide you over until I'm able to be back to normal. I was recently on the metro home. I noticed some oddities among my fellow commuters and dubbed us the "train of misfit commuters." Wanna know why:
-a hard of hearing woman (she had a serious hearing aide) was talking to herself...without sound.
-an American wearing a Real Madrid shirt. A soccer fan in DC? what?
there were most instances of misfit-ness, but I can't remember (and I left my handy dandy notebook upstairs), so I'll update more when I remember...maybe TOMORROW! woohoo

"Going Down"

As a girl who likes to read her daily Express newspaper in person and on the web, I’ve encountered a minor issue since I’ve moved to Woodley Park. (other than all the white people. I’m not used to y’all yet. As my friend said: “don’t look them in the eye, they don’t like confrontation.” So if you live in the area and see a white girl walking down Conn Ave with her head down whenever another white person walks by but smiling and engaging in conversation with a “minority” say hi, it’s probability me.)

I often take the elevator to the metro instead of the escalator, mostly to save time, but partially ‘cause I’m lazy and because, in case you didn’t know, it’s freakin’ hot here in DC. But anyway, there isn’t a friendly yellow-vested-Express-giver outer at the elevator, only the escalator which means I get on the train without my daily news fix, which is only remedied if some friendly commuter (read: sloppy) leaves behind their paper in the crack between the seat and the wall that I can grab and enjoy until my stop on the yellow line.

I hate coming to work without a handle on what is going on in the world, without knowing what stupid thing Bush did yesterday or what my horoscope is for the day. Heck, I’m even getting addicted to the comic strips. And bloglines, can’t live without that either. The problem is I’m not sure how to fix this problem, I have no desire to take the escalator when it’s actually a longer walk and then I have to backtrack (sorta) to the train platform itself. Do I just suck it up and hope that someone will leave their paper behind? Do I come to work uninformed and read the paper online?

Now before you start saying:
“C$ you could watch the morning news to get your fix”
Or
“C$ you could get the full WaPo delivered to your door for pennies and then read that on the metro.”
Or
“C$ you could read something else.”

There is a perfectly logical* reason why none of those solutions will help.

I have been without cable for almost 3 years. No Project Runway, no Sopranos or Sports Center for me. I’ve sent 3 years watching network TV which means that every morning I had my choice among 5 different morning shows, all carrying very similar stories and morning personalities (unless I was going to work late and could watch the 7:30 airing of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on the WB which, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to start the day. Topped only by doing something that isn’t shown on network TV). But now that I have (free) cable, I have over 100 channels to choose from during my morning routine and I’ve got a lot of popular culture to catch up on, which of course means watching MTV and VH1 in the morning while I’m drying my hair or trying to look somewhat presentable for the office. Since I’ve moved in, I’ve woken up to Rhinna or Farrell instead of Matt Lauer or Harry Smith—cable is a beautiful thing. So instead of being an informed yuppie that can carry her own at the water cooler, I’ve turned into someone that hopes to perfect the booty shake sooner rather than later.

Secondly, although I enjoy reading the full WaPo on the weekends, it has no appeal to me on the weekdays. All that text. All that reading. And no funny Eye Openers to, well open my eyes. That’s why I love the Express. Everything I need to know to carry on a somewhat intelligent conversation is complied and condensed to one handy paper. No section A B and C for this girl. Plus, I love the Friday BIO (By Invitation Only) wedding part they put in the weekend guide. It’s like the poor man’s New York Sunday Times wedding section.

I like to think that every day is a new day to do something great. It’s the optimist in me. And I like to think that “maybe this is my day.” The day when I’ll think great big ideas that will change the world. That I will come up with a way to solve all of these problems or come up with some great invention. With that being said, starting out my day by reading The Devil Wears Prada or some other chick-lit material doesn’t help with my take on the world mentality. It either makes me bitter (bad boss or lack of a boy toy), sad or any other emotion other than awake. And reading anything heavier than chick lit at 7:30 in the morning does not appeal to me. At all. So stop there. That’s why the Express is perfect: a little mix of humor, gossip, fashion, and yes, news.

SO there you have it. I don’t have any suggestions on how to solve my problem other than to just walk the extra block(ish) to get the Express or resort to reading it online. Any one else have any ideas?

And just so you know, today hasn’t shaped up to be the day in which I take on the world. Instead, I think I’ll just stick to my air conditioned office and read blogs.

*logical in my own head. Might not be to you, but eh, this is my blog.
